Just one day after an epic session at the HIIT Club, I found myself seeking a new challenge. As I scrolled through the Mind Body Connect application for a functional gym, the 360 Specialised training facility popped up. This gym has been around for quite some time, starting out in Woodstock and then moving to the open premises of the Foreshore. Owner and trainer Chris Walsch has moved away from the dated total body-building approach and moved on to variation and total fitness training. Attending this gym allows you to challenge yourself in every fitness facet possible. I guess this is where he gets the name of his club from. Total body fitness incorporates not only the typical pumping iron approach, but encompasses the full function of the bosu, swiss balls, kettlebells, dumbells, TRXs and punching/rocket bags. All pieces of equipment, in combination with incredible body-weight exercises, allow you to take full advantage of multiple planes of movement – thus activating a vast range of muscle groups instead of only one, as in conventional weight training (which I believe still has its function depending on your goal).

Like most of the gyms around Cape Town, 360 Specialised offers a variety of classes for all fitness levels. These include:

  • BOX FIT;
  • 360 FIT.

Having researched and taken in all of the above via 360 Sepcialised’s website and my friends’ personal opinions, my training partner, Dale Edwards, and I decided to try out this gym. Calling in to enquire about the Warrior Workout, I was informed that it’s quite an advanced workout – utilising mostly upper-body strength, speed and power. This was incredibly inviting, as this type of training is exactly what we need for our next event: The Grind 2 ISOCR (Indoor Sprint Obstacle Course Race), which will be taking place at the Belville Velodrome, on 11 June 2016.

My current strength and functional-fitness levels fortunately meant that I was fully prepared for the Warrior Workout, which was hosted – in this case – by personal trainer Mazi. What I thought would be an easily manageable workout, was definitely quite the opposite! It proved an absolute eye opener of a workout, designed for beastly function and body awareness. Dale and I were encouraged to put ourselves to the ultimate test, using just our natural body weight. The workout consisted of three-minute rounds of super-set workouts, incorporating:

  • Pull ups;
  • Squats;
  • Monkey-bar climbs;
  • Rope climbs;
  • Split lunges;
  • Dips;
  • Up and overs;
  • Skin the cats; and
  • Push ups.

I may be missing out on a few additional exercises, but none the less the overall workout was definitely not for the faint-hearted. I had been warned that it would be tough. Despite all this, Dale and I managed to complete the class with our dignity still in tact. We applauded Mazi on an incredibly challenging session, which we will definitely return to do again – only, this time, better prepared.

Mazi’s focus at 360 Specialised is functional training, but he also encourages general strength and conditioning. The infamous Warrior Workout is one of his favourite classes, which is clearly displayed in his motivational quotes during the class. If you need to get hold of him, call the club and ask for his assistance – you will not be disappointed!

As mentioned above, the Warrior Workout is a fully functional training programme, utilising mostly upper-body strength, endurance and fitness. It is an advance workout for athletes who want to push themselves to and above their limits. If this is not what you are looking for, there are many other classes to choose from (see the list above). After trying them out, you are sure to feel as though your healthier, more active body is emerging.
